Hardboard is one of the most popular and inexpensive materials for the siding. A lot of homeowners prefer to have hardboard sidings in their homes because of their distinctive characteristics. However, it starts wearing down over time and needs to be repaired immediately. You should know how to repair a hardboard siding effectively if you don’t want to face any severe damages later.
Here are a few steps mentioned that you can follow to repair hardboard siding.
• Check and Clean
First of all, you need to check the siding panels to see if there is any hold, mould, or any hidden flaw. You should start checking those panels that are near the ground as they are highly likely going to mould. Then, you can remove the damaged siding panel with the help of a claw hammer.
Extract the nails left on the wall. Now you can measure the hardboard siding properly to ensure that the new panel has the same size. If you want the siding panels to be secured, you should nail the siding panel at every 8 inches. This way, it is going to firmly attach on the wall surface. You can also clean the area around the holes with a small wire brush.
• Apply Filler Compound & Sand
Take a putty knife and apply filler compound to the holes of the panel sidings. You can get the filler compound easily from any nearby store. For larger holes, you should apply equal layers of the filler compounds. Also, be careful when you apply filler compound to the smaller holes as it should be adequate to cover the areas.
Before you move to the next step, wait for the filler compound to dry. However, it depends upon the type of your filler compound that how much time it is going to take to dry completely. You can check the instructions given by the manufacturer to ensure that you carry out the repairing process effectively. Once it is dry, you can use sand the area with the help of fine-grain sandpaper. Make sure that the area you are sanding is at level with the rest of the hardboard siding.
• Paint
You can remove the old paint peelings from your hardboard siding with a scraper. The surface area should be even and smooth before you apply paint on it. You can also wash the hardboard siding using a mild detergent or natural solution. Once the siding gets dry, you should begin painting it. It is even better if you apply the primer to it before painting. Two layers of a good quality primer would be sufficient to have an even coating of paint.
Also, you should start from the upper side of the hardboard siding and work yourself down. It will help minimize the paint splashes. After applying each coating, you should wait for it to dry before you apply another one. It will help get a smooth finishing in the end like a pro.
