5 Tips for Installing Timber Joists

Timber joist is used for both residential and commercial properties because of the immense benefits it offers. It is a wooden part that helps support load during the construction. The most common types of timber joists are floor joists and ceiling joists. They are set perpendicular to horizontal elements in the floor or ceiling. If you want the timber joists to last longer, you should install it with proper care and attention.

Here are five tips mentioned to help you install timber joists.

  • Background Knowledge

First of all, you must have the right background knowledge and information regarding timber joists before you decide to install them. They must be capable of withstanding the load after being installed and fully braced. Internet is a great source of help so you can watch videos and read step by step guides to make your installation process successful.

  • Tools & Equipment

The other important tip for installing timber joists is to have the right set of tools and equipment. For instance, you must have the correct rim boards, blocking panels, and joist hangers to brace and nail the timber joist properly. You can get all the required tools and equipment from any nearby hardware store. However, if they are expensive and won’t be of any use after the installation of timber joists, you should better rent them or borrow it from any of your friends or relatives. But if you have already hired a contractor to get the timber joists installed, you won’t have to worry about getting the tools and equipment as he would already have them.

  • Temporary Sheathing

You should also install temporary sheathing or temporary bracing to prevent the timber joists from buckling. It would help provide enough support to timber joists in standing stronger for a longer period. However, if you don’t pay heed to these things, you might have to face the drastic consequences later. So, it is better to be careful to avoid any extra pressure on your pocket.

  • Blocking

When you apply timber joists over interior support, you might require blocking there. It is one of the essential tips or steps that you shouldn’t skip if you want the timber joists to serve the purpose and carry the load properly. However, the blocks must be larger than the depth of timber joists. Also, remember to attach these blocks at the top and bottom flanges of timber joists. You should also reinforce the wooden blocks at both sides of the joist and at bearing points to prevent it from rolling over.

  • Drilling

You should know how to drill the center web of the timber joist properly. You can also follow the instructions given by the manufacturer as he can guide you about the distances you need to keep between two holes, final hole and bearing point, flanges, or any other critical part of the joist. However, if you feel like it is not your cup of tea, you can hire an expert at any point of the installation process.
